Pope Foundation Sponsors a Star-Studded Columbus Day

The 71st Annual Columbus Day Parade was held on Monday, October 10th, 2015. The world’s largest Columbus Day Parade drew millions of people to watch the spectacle that is an annual tradition for so many families. The parade was broadcasted across the nation on ABC and throughout Italy on RAI. The Columbus Citizens Foundation, the organizer of the event, held the Annual Columbus Day Gala at the Waldorf-Astoria on Saturday night with A-List entertainment. Italy’s popular trio, Il Volo, sang their mega-hit rendition of “O Sole Mio” and other Italian favorites like “Volare.”

Stephanie Germanotta, most commonly known as “Lady Gaga” was honored along with her mother for their contributions to the Born This Way Foundation. Stephanie and her family have been long-time members of the Columbus Citizens Foundation, a non-profit organization that Generoso Pope founded in 1929. She said in an interview, “I’ve been spending time at the Columbus Citizens Foundation since I was fourteen years old. It’s a place that I remember fondly that was all about family and community and taking care of each other. When somebody says ‘you did a good job,’ it doesn’t always mean something, but everyone here is saying that we did a great job tonight. That means a lot to us.”

After Stephanie received her award, she gave the crowd a beautiful performance with a live band. Midway through her set, Stephanie announced she had a special guest with her that night. Mr. Tony Bennett, a former Columbus Day Parade Grand Marshall, walked out on stage to sing a duet.

The Gala chairs announced that the event raised over 3 million dollars for scholarships. The Generoso Pope Foundation is proud to sponsor the Columbus Day weekend, a gathering which continues to keep the Italian culture celebrated and helps young students achieve their dreams.
